Bus Users UK, a charity campaigning for the rights of bus users, has published new research capturing the lived experience of disabled bus passengers, which was funded by our User Research Grants.
What did the research focus on and find?
The research, titled “Why are we waiting? Disabled people’s experiences of travelling by bus”, set out to understand:
- the main challenges faced by different groups of disabled passengers throughout their journeys
- the needs of disabled people in using the bus network, and
- what opportunities exist for service improvement to better meet the needs of a wide range of disabled passengers.
Bus Users UK has made a raft of recommendations in the report, emphasising the need for collaboration between Government, transport industry stakeholders, local authorities, and disabled people.
“An eye-opening piece”
Chelsea Fleming, Innovation Manager at the Motability Foundation said: “This is an eye-opening piece of research from Bus Users UK, highlighting the lived experience of disabled people when travelling by bus.
“At the Motability Foundation we want to help break the barriers that disabled people face when using public transport, and we hope that the recommendations made in this report help to bring about improvements to the accessibility of bus travel.”
