We are making a change to our Driving Lessons Grants for eligible Motability Scheme customers. From 1 July 2024, new applicants will need to pass their theory test before applying.
What does this mean for applicants?
Driving Lessons Grants will continue to fund 40 hours of driving lessons. Previously, grant recipients could access 14 hours of lessons before they passed their theory test. Once they passed the test, they could access the remaining 26 hours. This change to our Driving Lessons Grant means that grant recipients will now access all 40 hours of grant-funded lessons in one go, resulting in an uninterrupted learning experience.
All learner drivers must pass their theory test before booking their practical test.
Learners can apply for the theory test as soon as they have a provisional licence.
“Doing my theory test early gave me confidence on the roads”
Ben, one of our grant recipients, explains: “I took my theory test before I started my lessons and it really helped me focus on driving, as I already knew all the road markings and signs. It meant it didn’t eat into my lesson time - my instructor could spend time in the car coaching me on the practical side of things.”
Ben has always loved cars and was very keen to get on the road. He passed his practical test first time and added: “Doing my theory test early gave me confidence on the roads. I felt safe, and it meant I could just get on with driving.”
Ready to go
Keith Garrell, Head of Grants Programmes at Motability Foundation, said: “We offer grants for up to 40 hours of driving lessons to people who have a lease agreement on the Motability Scheme or who need familiarisation for new driving controls in a grant-funded vehicle.
“We have always encouraged grant recipients to book and study for their theory test as soon as possible. Once they have passed their theory test, they are ready to go!”
