In July 2019 we announced the creation of a new grant programme – Stopped Allowance Support, which was intended to help Scheme customers who lose their higher rate mobility benefit through reassessment, either in transitioning to PIP, renewing their PIP award, or in renewing their DLA award. The programme was launched in September 2019 with a commitment to provide funding for three years.
We are announcing that in line with our commitment on launch, the Stopped Allowance Support programme will end on 30 September 2022.
Transitional Support and Additional Transitional Support are not affected by the closure of Stopped Allowance Support, and will continue unchanged.
Scheme customers do not need to do anything. If they are eligible for Stopped Allowance Support before the programme closes, Motability Operations will notify them in a letter explaining the Stopped Allowance and vehicle handback process.
Motability is committed to our vision that no disabled person shall be disadvantaged due to poor access to transportation, and our aim is to help as many disabled people as we can with the funds we have available. We are expanding the way we do this to ensure that we provide a range of funding to help all disabled people in need of assistance with their personal transportation, including those who choose not to, or who cannot use the Motability Scheme. Recent examples of our expanded funding include our commitments in December 2021 to use £120million to sustain and increase current grant spending on our Scheme-related grant programme, and to use £50million to expand our support for other organisations and charities, both with grants awarded over the next three financial years ending March 2025.
