New grant awarded to Spinal Muscular Atrophy UK

Monday, 23 October 2023

We are delighted to have awarded a grant to Spinal Muscular Atrophy UK (SMA UK).

Why are we funding SMA UK?

SMA UK is a charity which supports those with all three types of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), through holistic support and by helping disabled people to access grants.

Each year, around 70 babies are affected by SMA in the UK, and around 1,500 people in the UK are living with SMA now.

SMA UK’s SMArt Moves project

SMA UK will be using the grant to support their SMArt Moves project. The funding will be used over a three-year period to assist 180 disabled people living with SMA to:

  • Purchase power wheelchairs
  • Purchase manual wheelchairs
  • Purchase a number of other pieces of equipment to improve their mobility and independence.

“The grant from the Motability Foundation will have an enormous positive impact on the SMA Community”

Giles Lomax, CEO at SMA UK said: “We know how expensive specialist pieces of equipment are and our SMArt Moves initiative will allow for the SMA community to get access to provision a lot quicker.

“The grant from the Motability Foundation will have an enormous positive impact on the SMA community and we can’t wait to see the first successful person take ownership of their new piece of equipment!”
